Located at the north end of Highway 101, 28 km (17.5 mi.) north of Powell River, this area was called Gl'amin for the thousands of years that the Coast Salish people were settled here. It was the site of a year round village for the Sliammon, Klahoose and Homalco peoples. Because it could be accessed by both land and sea and its location enabled people to detect travelers at a distance, it was a safe and convenient settlement. The area was close to areas where shellfish, salmon and land animals were plentiful. In addition, it had a good supply of fresh water and many cedar trees were available for the making of tools, shelter, clothing and other artifacts.

In 1889 a Swedish émigré, Frederick Thulin, first saw the area and he later settled there with his brother. They named the area Lund after the Swedish city of that name. The community thrived and by 1895 it had the only hotel north of Vancouver. Forestry and boat-building were both successful early industries.

Today Lund's harbour welcomes sailboats and recreational motor craft and is a mecca for sports fishermen. The town's Swedish heritage is visible in the distinctive style of the Lund Hotel. Tourists enjoy sightseeing tours, the boardwalk, craft shops, restaurants and cafés overlooking the busy harbour. Lund is the gateway to Desolation Sound, some of the most beautiful waterways on the coast and accessible only by water or air. Resorts in both Okeover and Lund offer sea kayak or cruise boat rentals for visitors to enjoy the serenity of Desolation Sound. Desolation Sound Marine Park, BC's largest and most popular marine park, is enjoyable for swimming and scuba diving as well as excellent hiking in the forested uplands.

Lund also provides access to beautiful lakes where swimming and back country hiking are popular. This area has some of the most beautiful scenery on the
