Vancouver Art Gallery
Escape Vancouver Completely (by way of North Vancouver) Without Touching a Car Part 1 of 5 – The Vancouver Art Gallery This year my wife and I were celebrating a significant wedding anniversary and decided to get away from it all and actually relax. As you might imagine, children complicate matters; we could not go far for long. I devised an escape that would let us feel like we got away from it all while still maintaining a reasonable distance in case of an emergency. My second objective was to be able avoid having to use a car. We like […]
The Robert Bateman Centre Gallery Victoria
Robert Bateman is essentially the Canadian elder statesman of wildlife art. New as of 2013, at 470 Belleville Street, Victoria, I was pleased to find (at the former location of the Wax Museum) a gallery of Bateman’s works. The entire building was reno’d within an inch of its life. The facilities (super clean bathrooms) were completely updated. The gallery itself is on the 2nd floor. It’s worth watching the introductory 5-minute video. On film, Bateman himself talks about his environmental views. Subsequently when you step into the gallery you see some of his message in the paintings. For example, there’s […]
Bowen Island’s Artisan Square
Bowen Island is a contradiction. It’s a 20 minute ferry ride from Horseshoe Bay but feels like miles and miles from the Lower Mainland and Vancouver. In fact I suspect for most people, just getting to Horseshoe Bay makes up the bulk of the travel time. The island is about 6 km wide and 12 km long taking up about 49.94 sq. km. Like the nearby Horseshoe Bay, which oddly is part of West Vancouver, it’s mountainous and lush. There are about 3500 permanent residents. There are both coniferous and deciduous trees on the island and when my family was […]
Favourite Things To See And Do In Bella Coola Valley
Bella Coola’s Hidden Hot SpotsThese easy-access activities are suited to 15 minute to 1-2 hour self guided excursions in Bella Coola, or hire a guide for a more challenging adventure! Clayton FallsThis 5 minute walk takes you behind the BC Hydro generating plant to see the cascading Clayton Falls up close. Across the road, you can walk to the mouth of Clayton Creek, where Alexander Mackenzie canoed past in 1793, to watch the seals bobbing their heads in and out of the water waiting for fresh fish. Talleho CanneryCharter a boat over to Talleho Cannery and explore the historic fishing […]
Malcolm Island Activities
What a beautiful summer it has been so far. Since the end of May I believe it has only rained for 4 days. I love staying here. Whether in the upper or lower suite, the views are incredible from our private deck. At times the sunsets light up the sky till almost 10:30 at night. They provide kayaks here which you can launch right off the beach in front of the lodge. As soon as you leave the deck you are on the beach and can walk for miles. There are a couple of beautiful hiking trails. The Mateoja […]
