Sooke Region Museum and Visitor Information Centre
Located off of Highway 14 (Sooke Rd.) on Phillips Rd, this is one of the more interesting Visitor Centres to visit. A lot of times when you go to a visitor centre, it’s a dull looking facility with racks of brochures and booklets. This is not the case with Sooke‘s visitor centre. This place has the top of a lighthouse on it! The Triangle Island Lighthouse was moved from its original location to the Sooke Visitor Centre and Museum. Once inside the staff running the centre are very knowledgeable and within a few minutes we had set our priorities of […]
Life’s Peachy in Peachland!
Nestled between the mountains and the shores of the Okanagan Lake, the small town of Peachland has a friendly and welcoming atmosphere that goes to make this one of the Okanagan’s popular summertime destinations. Peachland is about half an hour’s drive from the city of Kelowna, and it’s in the heart of the Okanagan Valley; an area renowned for its wonderful summer weather that’s perfect for growing plenty of fruit and vines. Talking of fruit, yes, it was peaches that inspired the name of the town when one of the first settlers tasted the wonderfully tasty peaches and decided to […]
Old Hastings Mill Store Museum
For many Vancouverites on a visit to Jericho Beach, there is a hidden gem of a museum sitting peacefully at the corner of a park with a view onto the Royal Vancouver Yacht Club. The Old Hastings Mill Store Museum is located at 1575 Alma Street at Point Grey Road. Many people speeding along Point Grey Road tend to veer left to head south on Alma and never know the museum is there. What makes this 1865 building a true rarity is not just its age, but also the fact it survived The Great Vancouver Fire of 1886, which destroyed […]
More Than Meets the Eye to Downtown Kamloops
When you stay in Kamloops there are numerous hotels, motels and inns to choose from and they are mainly concentrated within three different parts of the city: downtown Kamloops, Sahali and Aberdeen, and along the Highway 1 corridor. The hotels on the highway are great for a quick getaway in the morning but not recommended if you want a more peaceful retreat. Up in the Sahali and Aberdeen areas of Kamloops are some of the city’s larger hotels and the benefit of being higher up is that many rooms come with a great valley and city view. Access to the […]
Vancouver’s Chinatown: A Fun, Fantastic Destination
Vancouver‘s Chinatown is a fantastic place to spend the day shopping, sightseeing, and sampling delicious Chinese cuisine. With striking architecture, beautiful gardens, and bustling marketplaces, it features a rich history that dates back to 1890, when early Chinese immigrants to Vancouver settled in Shanghai Alley. By 1898, the area was thriving, and even included the famous 500 seat Sing Kew Chinese Theatre, which was destroyed during a fire in 1947. In 1904, Canton Alley was created, and the convergence of the two created a vibrant area where music could be heard, shopping could be enjoyed, and political and cultural activities […]
British Columbia’s Totem Poles Bring History to Life
Magnificent sculptures, normally carved from Western Red Cedar trees by people indigenous to the Pacific Northwest, Totem Poles depict a variety of images which often evoke legends, commemorative stories, cultural beliefs, or shamanic powers. There are many different types of totem poles with variants that range from mortuary structures that contain grave boxes to simple pieces which artists have used as canvases for self-expression. There are many places in BC where you can view different types of totem poles – let’s take a look at some of the most popular. The Museum of Anthropology at UBC Founded in 1947, this […]
Top 5 Things To Do On Texada Island
In my opinion, the Top Five things to do on Texada Island are: Walking old growth forest trailsThe Dr. Kay Garner Nature Trail along the forested shoreline of Shelter Point Regional Park offers some spectacular examples of BC coastal forest. The trail begins at the intersection of Gillies Bay Rd. and Shelter Point Rd. Hiking and camping Shelter Point Regional Campground. Ocean front and rich forested camp sites, food concession, showers and there are no land predators to eat you. This is a spectacular public spot for watching sunsets. The park entrance is at the intersection of Gillies Bay Rd. […]
Egmont Heritage Centre
Across the road from the entrance to Skookumchuck Narrows Provincial Park, which is on Egmont Road, you will find the Egmont Heritage Centre. It’s a small museum with artefacts from Egmont’s pioneer and 20th century past. What’s refreshing about the museum is that it’s not so fancy that you can’t get up close to things. For kids, they can play with old phones — dialling is a novel activity. A lot of Egmont’s history is connected to Portuguese Joe, also known as Joe Silvey. His rather busy life — which included whaling in the Azores, two wives, many children […]
Williams Lake in a Hurry
The editors of this website asked local businesses for the essential recommendations for Williams Lake. We asked them: “If you imagine that someone has come to you and they are on a totally tight time line, and asked you these questions, what would you tell them?” 1. Where should I eat that I should not miss in Williams Lake? Answer: Carmens Restaurant, Chicken Parmigiana with fettucini alfredo, located on Lakeview Crescent in the Overlander Hotel A quick healthy over the counter meal at Bean Counter on 3rd Ave., attached to the library. Red Dog Pub – very good pub food, […]
Burnaby Village Museum
The first full week of my daughter’s summer vacation has ended and it was a busy one. I took care of her and one of her friends during the week, and we trekked to various activities around the city. The day we chose to go to the Burnaby Village Museum was the only rainy day all week. The rain didn’t bother us, as most of the exhibits were indoors. The museum is celebrating its 40th Anniversary this year, so gate admission is free. The Burnaby Village Museum is meant to give visitors an idea of what life was like in […]
