John’s Place on Pandora

About three years ago I compiled a list of breakfast spots in Victoria that I wanted to try. (See www.travelinbc.com/blog/victoria/possible-victoria-breakfast-spots-willys-winner) This year I lucked out and we got a seat at the popular John’s Place at 723 Pandora Ave in downtown Victoria. It’s a funky place that opening in 1984. The walls are covered with memorabilia of all sorts with a focus on sports. You could look at the walls all day. Our server was a feisty lady who quite wisely recommended a lavender latte to my wife and daughter, which they thoroughly enjoyed. My son is a smoothie snob […]

MeeT in Yaletown

Although chilly (5 degrees C) it was not raining and we decided to walk the two streets and look to see what restaurants took our fancy. A place called MeeT on Mainland was near to where we started and it was a burgers and beer kind of place but – it took a moment looking at the menu – it was entirely vegan. We continued to walk the two blocks. There were pubs, Italian, Greek, and a couple of chains like The Keg and Cactus Club. In the end I wanted to try MeeT because my wife, who is a […]

Cuckoo Trattoria and Pizzeria

You know those classy Italian restaurants that have great food and it’s tough to secure a reservation? I do, but honestly what is one doing in Coombs, BC? This tiny town is 10 minutes west of Parksville along highway 4A, also known as the Alberni Highway. This is not the big city! The Cuckoo Trattoria and Pizzeria is a large space with a lot of outdoor seating that looks over the woods that are behind the Goats on the Roof shopping destination. We were connecting with family and friends and others negotiated the reservation and we sat at the Mexican […]

The Pinnacle at the Pier

Escape Vancouver Completely (by way of North Vancouver) Without Touching a Car Part 5 of 5 – The Pinnacle at the Pier After a fun time with the Night Market (part 4 of this series), it was time to put our feet up. My primary reason for picking the The Pinnacle in North Vancouver was the location. Due to not having a car for this adventure, I desired walking distance from the Seabus. And this place was really close. One thing I’ve noticed in the last 3 years is that the hotel rates in the Vancouver area have gone nuts. […]

Tap and Barrel Shipyards

Escape Vancouver Completely (by way of North Vancouver) Without Touching a Car Part 3 of 5 – Tap and Barrel Right beside Lonsdale Quay (part 2 of this adventure), there is an area called The Shipyards, which is in what they call Lower Lonsdale. There’s a funky art gallery and a night market (more on that later) and a couple of restaurants. We first looked at Pier 7, but the menu had only one option for vegetarians. We wandered over to Tap and Barrel, which I assumed would be a burger-fries-beer mentality. It was, but it also held a number […]

Chuck and Kitty’s Country Café Harrison Hot Springs

For our last breakfast at Harrison Hot Springs, we decided to try Chuck and Kitty’s. We’d seen it the previous day when shopping in the area. I was hoping it would be a bit better than Lakeview Restaurant. Well, we were not disappointed. On Saturdays and Sundays they do a Waffle Bacon Benny, which was quite fun. You could barely see the waffle for the eggs, sauce and bacon. At our table a baked blueberry oatmeal dish was had, which was very much appreciated. And, compared to our first breakfast, it seemed a better deal financially. They are located at […]

Village Pizzeria Harrison Hot Springs

Village Pizzeria is a 10-minute walk from Harrison Hot Springs Resort, very close to Harrison Hot Springs‘ lonely street light. (101-160 Lillooet Rd.) They specialize in take out more than dine-in, to the point where they don’t have a washroom for customers. However, our dine-in experience was fine. We enjoyed both meat and veggie pizzas and it was a nice way to dine on a very wet and cold weekday evening. If you are in one of the nearby hotels and want to grab big pizzas and watch a movie in your room, this would be a way to go. […]

Yolks in Vancouver

We were driving out of Vancouver on a weekday morning and wanted to have breakfast out and avoid rush hour traffic. Because I can’t make waffles to save my life, I looked for a waffle place. We found Yolks on West Broadway between Ash and Cambie. Around mid-morning on a weekday, it was pretty busy. There wasn’t a wait for a table but it was full. We were driving and managed to find street parking, but it’s a short walk from the Cambie Skytrain station, making it easy to reach from downtown Vancouver. Waffles, pancakes and granola were the choices […]

True Confections Vancouver

When I lived in Toronto in the 80s, there were a ton of places where you could get desserts late at night and really hammer that glycemic index. When I moved to Vancouver, the overall tone was either more about fitness or more about how you looked and, either way, there were fewer super powered dessert places. However, True Confections at Broadway and Alma, which is in the very western edge of Kitsilano, is a wonderfully high calorie place to truly shove one’s diet and health plans down the drain. We were there on a rainy Tuesday around 8:30 and […]

The Blue Fox Cafe in Victoria

At while ago I complied a list of Victoria breakfast places and I’ve been meaning to actually try them all. Eventually. We lucked out on a Wednesday morning and squeaked into the Blue Fox Café on Fort Street in downtown Victoria. It’s a smallish place and rather popular. A couple of years ago, when we were compiling the list, the line-up was too big and we did not try. It was worth the wait, even though it was a three-year wait. The staff is attentive and they managed to squeeze us into a table. We had arrived around 10:30 AM […]
