Whistler: a Â…summer tourist mecca or a place to fling oneself roughly down a mountain?

It has been many years since going to Whistler.  My family doesn’t ski or snowboard and thus there has been a low desire to take effort to travel from Vancouver to Whistler.  When the 2010 Winter Olympics were announced and the subsequent Highway 99 (Sea-to-Sky) upgrade was started, many of us Vancouver types stayed off the road.  For years. Recently during a weekend getaway with my kids in Squamish, I thought, what the heck.  It’s summer, the scenery will be amazing and Whistler is only an hour away. And when I say an hour, I mean it literally.  From the […]

Squamish Top 6 Things to See and Do

Obviously if you’re like me and have not been to Squamish since before the 2010 Winter Olympics, things have changed. A lot. But for those of you looking for more background, Squamish is the first real town north of Vancouver and West Vancouver. You truly feel past the point of sane commuting. (I hear stories of people doing Squamish-Vancouver commutes, but this induces the same scepticism that I have when I hear stories of people bending spoons with their mind powers.) The Sea-to-Sky Highway (#99) is well named as the scenery up to Squamish is stunning as you wind your […]

Shannon Falls

Shannon Falls Provincial Park is a favourite spot of mine in BC because it allows you to enjoy the stunning scenery without much effort.  Of course old aphorisms stating the journey is more important than the destination were composed by people who never sat beside a chain smoker in withdrawal on a 12 hour flight from London to Cape Town or hiked up a BC mountain with bad knees. Regardless, Shannon Falls is 335 m (1105 ft.) of wonder.  When you pull into the parking lot, if it’s a beautiful day, it will likely be full.  There was no signage […]

Holiday Motel & RV Resort home to movie stars!

Editor’s Note: Perhaps the most famous film that used Hope BC as a setting is First Blood, the first of the Rambo films starring Sylvester Stallone. In 2011, a famous bridge that Rambo walked across, was taken down, 30 years after filming. However, Hope has been the backdrop for other films located at Holiday Motel & RV Resort. The new proprietor of the resort wrote this installment. One movie, filmed in 1995, is titled Far From Home which is about friendship and survival of a teenage boy and his dog. John adopts a stray dog and names him ‘Yellow’. Both […]

Welcome to the Bathtub Racing Capital of the World!

You may have heard of Nanaimo because of those delicious Nanaimo bars that are sold all across Canada, and yes, it was named after the city on Vancouver Island! But there’s more to Nanaimo than Canada’s favourite dessert! Did you know that this is the ‘Bathtub Racing Capital of the World’? No, seriously! Bathtub racing was invented here in Nanaimo in 1967 with a race between Nanaimo and Vancouver as a way of promoting this quirky little city to the rest of the world. The idea took off and now there’s a bathtub race here on the last weekend of […]

Victoria’s Inner Harbour

At any time of the year a visit to Victoria‘s Inner Harbour offers plenty of things to see and do, but during the summer this corner of British Columbia‘s capital city really comes to life! Artists, musicians, street performers and more line the walkway of the Inner Harbour and keep both locals and tourists entertained as we make our way from one attraction to the next. While there are specific attractions on the Inner harbour, just sitting and watching the float planes taking off and landing is quite an experience if you’ve never seen this before. And it makes you […]

Best Western Premier Prestige Oceanfront Resort

The name of this new hotel in Sooke BC is a bit of a mouthful, but it is worth investigating. I’m very fond on new hotels because you never get a “tired” room. This feels like a double branded hotel. This Sooke hotel is part of the Prestige Hotels and Resorts collection of hotels which are in major BC communities like Vernon, Nelson, Kelowna, Cranbrook, Golden, Radium Hot Springs, Rossland and Salmon Arm. When you pull into their parking lot, you are met with white columns and a very high impressive front. It was off season when we visited so […]

The Scenic Sea to Sky Highway

Around the world there are scenic highways that are renowned for their beauty, and that must be driven on at least once in your life; well here in Canada that road is the Sea to Sky Highway, and, on a clear day at least, this is one of the most scenic stretches of road you’ll find anywhere. The Sea to Sky Highway is officially named Highway 99 and this most famous stretch of it runs along the coast from Horseshoe Bay in West Vancouver, and heads 134 kilometres (83 miles) north, passing through Lions Bay, Squamish, Whistler and eventually Pemberton. […]
