Cortes Island Accommodations
Cortes Island British Columbia Travel Information
Cortes Island is located between the spectacular snowy peaks of the coastal mountain range and the rugged terrain of northern Vancouver Island. It sits at the top of Georgia Straight but is protected from Pacific storms by a naturally occurring rain shadow. Its location provides for higher than average sunshine in a region known for heavy rains, warmer air and water temperatures and wonderful summer swimming at Hague Lake, Smelt Bay Provincial Park or on the beaches of Marina Island that are uncovered at low tide.
The Klahoose First Nation wintered at Squirrel Cove and traveled in sea-going canoes to Toba Inlet in spring and summer, seeking salmon, edible plants and wildlife. Today, many visitors arrive by yacht and the island is a popular spot for kayaking and sailing. Boaters exploring Desolation Sound often stay at Gorge Harbour where the harbour entrance is enhanced with petroglyphs carved into the rock by ancient travelers.
At the center of the Island is a freshwater lake surrounded by white sandy beaches. Improbable Wolf Bluff Castle with its five stories of medieval ramparts is a popular destination for visitors. Hiking and biking trails cover the island and fishing, hunting for shellfish and exploring the tidal pools at Manson's Lagoon are all popular activities.
There are a range of accommodations and restaurants on the island, as well as grocery stores, a liquor store and gas pumps. Gorge Harbour is a full facility marina.
