Sointula BC is located on Malcolm Island, which is a short (about 30 minutes) ferry ride from Port McNeil, itself located on the much larger Vancouver Island. Malcolm Island is 23 km (15 mi.) long and 5 km (3 mi.) wide.
In the early 1900s, a group of people from Finland attempted to set up a utopian lifestyle on Malcolm Island, which resulted in the town of Sointula. Due to hardships and political issues, the ideals of common property and shared effort did not last, but it was the start of a community that has lasted more than a century.
Today, the Sointula's focus is escaping the hustle and bustle of full sized towns and enjoying fishing, bird watching, hiking, crafts and the scenery. Book a campground, bed and breakfast or cottage today.
